Venice Departures

Marco Polo Airport consists of an older terminal and an impressive modern and newer terminal building. The airport is served by many domestic and international flights and by a large number of airlines. It is located just 13km/8 miles to the north of Central Venice.

Passengers should arrive at the airport at least two hours before take-off for an international destination, and at least one hour before departure for domestic flights. If you will be using public transportation (buses, taxis, water taxis or water buses) to reach the airport, find out how long the trip will take, to ensure that you get there in good time. When arriving by car, please leave enough time to find suitable parking as some times of the year can be very busy.

Checking-In at Marco Polo Airport

The Departure Area is located on the 1st floor of the airport terminal and is accessible by lift or escalator. You will find a long row of check-in desks, with each counter assigned to a specific flight. The assigned flight information is displayed on an electronic sign above the counter. This information is usually available two hours before the flight’s departure. Assistance is available from the SAVE information desk near the ticket offices.

At the check-in counter, present your airline ticket, identity document and the baggage you will be loading. Remember to show your air miles card as well, if you have one. You will then receive a boarding card, which will be required to pass security and to board the plane. Ensure that you know your airline’s boarding time and the gate number for the flight.

Proceed to the Departures area where you will need to first be cleared by security. You and all your baggage will be checked by x-ray and manual machines. Often it is required to remove some items of clothing and/or your shoes, therefore dress in a simple, comfortable fashion.

Hand baggage and Hold (checked) baggage

Each airline has different regulations for hand luggage and checked luggage, and there are certain items that are not allowed to be on board the plane or in checked luggage. Confirm with your airline, the exact criteria allowed for hold luggage, to avoid additional costs for baggage that exceeds the limits. Hand baggage, in most cases, may not weigh more than 5kg, with total dimensions (width, height, depth) of no more than 115cm.

Ensure that all your baggage is clearly labelled with your name, surname, address and telephone number.

Some of the prohibited items include weapons, explosives, and compressed gases (e.g. camping gas or self-defence sprays), infectious or poisonous substances, corrosive substances, radioactive or oxidizing substances, magnetizing substances and alarm devices.

The European Union (EU) have strict rules for liquid carried on board the airplane. Each type of liquid should be in separate containers holding no more than 100ml. These containers should then be placed in a clean, re-sealable plastic bag with a total capacity of no more than 1liter. The bag of liquids should be separately presented to the security officials. Whenever possible, pack liquids in checked baggage to facilitate the security procedure. Amongst others, liquids include water and other drinks, soups, syrups, creams, lotions and oils, sprays and perfumes, gel, pastes such as toothpaste, and liquid-solid mixtures.

Check with your airline if your hold baggage will be inspected, before securing it with padlocks, straps, nylon etc.

Services for Disabled Travellers

Passengers needing special assistance during their departure from Marco Polo Airport should inform their airline of their needs when reserving the flight ticket, or at least 48 hours before the assistance will be required. Qualified airport staff members will then be ready for your arrival and accompany you through the check-in and security procedures. Special assistant service at Marco Polo Airport is provided by Save S.p.a PRM assistance.

Once passengers have passed the security points, and have entered the secure departure area, there is an excellent assortment of bars, cafés and shops to enjoy. This part of the terminal has plenty of seating, and is modern and well-lit.
