Alghero Airport Arrivals (AHO)

Alghero Airport is the perfect arrival point for tourists coming to enjoy the sea and sunshine at the beautiful beaches in Sardinia. The airport is only 12 km from the city center of Alghero, a pleasant seaside town, and is also nearby the towns of Fertilia, Sassari, Zuari and Vilanove Monteleone. Due to its location, it is also well known as Alghero-Fertilia Airport, or Riviera del Corallo Airport, as the town of Alghero is the tourist capital of the Coral Riviera region. This Italian airport is not as large as many others, handling only a million and a half passengers per year, but is modern and equipped with all the facilities required by arriving passengers.

A variety of airline companies serve the destination. The largest being Ryanair, the popular low-cost airline, connecting the airport to many areas in Italy and nearby countries, as well as to further destinations such as London. Some of their destinations include Ancona, Brescia, Madrid, Girona, Gothenburg City, Hahn, Milan-Orio al Serio, Parma, Pisa, Rome-Ciampino, Venice-Treviso and Verona. Alitalia is also a major airline carrier at the airport, flying from Bologna, Milan-Linate, Rome-Fiumicino and Turin. Certain seasonal flights are also offered by Alitalia. Some of the other airline carriers at Alghero Airport include Meridiana Fly, Air One, Bmibaby, Thomson Airways an Jettime.

Passengers arriving in Alghero will be welcomed by a single but modern and well equipped terminal building. This building was recently upgraded and extended to allow for a greater number of passenger traffic at the airport. It is now capable of handling two million passengers per year. All the facilities within the airport of Alghero are easy to find, as the building is simply departures on the one end and arrivals on the other. The services are also clearly marked.

The arrivals area has various useful facilities such as a general information desk for all enquiries relating to the airport’s services, as well as a tourist information desk, which provides information about the Sardinian island, and in particular, Alghero and its surrounding areas. Staff at this desk can assist with accommodation arrangements, offer suggestions as to where the main tourist attractions can be found, and give advice on the local transport services available.

Other facilities useful to arriving passengers are the Lost and Found offices, which will offer assistance should you find that your baggage has gone missing, or that your baggage has been damaged. The staff members of your airline’s relevant lost and found operators will then initiate the process of retrieving your baggage. There is also a bank at the airport, currency exchange services, ATMs, a pharmacy and a reasonable number of shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.

When ready to leave Alghero, passengers can travel by bus or taxi, but not by train, as there is no train station at the airport. However, the train station in Alghero can be reached by a few of the bus services which provide frequent trips to Alghero. Bus and coach services at the airport are managed by the companies of ARST, FDS (or Ferrovie dello Sardegna), Fara Viaggi, Redentours Deplanu, Logudoro Tours, Autolinee Pani, Digitur Buslines, Nuragica Tours and Turmo Travel. These buses travel to most of the prominent Sardinian cities in the area, and also to certain resorts and seaside locations. The buses are by far the best option for travel in Sardinia, as the train services do not cover all areas on the island. However, the ‘Little Green Train’ is very popular amongst tourists. This train is an old but restored steam engine that travels through remote areas of the island, providing a lovely journey through Sardinian vegetation, over bridges, around mountain gorges and through other railway stations. If you need a faster and more private journey, a taxi would be ideal. Taxis and buses can be found outside the arrivals area.

Car hire is also very popular in Sardinia, as many of the more beautiful and remote beaches can only be reached by car. A hired vehicle is also great for traveling between towns and cities, and going for day-outings to view different areas of the island. Sardinia has a good road network, which is well connected to the airport by various major motorways. All of the famous and worldwide car hire companies are available at Alghero Airport, including Sixt, Avis, Budget, Auto Europa, National, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, Alamo and Targarent. They offer every type of vehicle, from smaller Ford Fiesta’s to larger minivans, such as the Ford Galaxy and Ford Transit Minibus.

Hotels within a short distance of the airport are the Comfort Inn and the La Meridien Hotel, while in the main tourism areas of Alghero the Hotel Dei Pini and Hotel Punta Negra are popular choices. There are hotels in the town center of Alghero, which are of a typical Italian flavor, and nearby the train and bus stations. Other hotels can be found along the Via Machin, in the historic Old Town area, as well as along the Via Enrico Mattei, which is a convenient location from where Alghero can be explored. There are no hotel facilities at the airport.

Disabled passengers are welcome in Alghero, and the terminal building is fully equipped for their comfort with adapted toilet facilities and telephones, ramps and lifts. Further information regarding Alghero arrivals is available from the information desks within the terminal.
