Getting to and from Olbia Airport (OLB)

Olbia Airport is found on the island of Sardinia, in Italy, and is an airport handling about one and a half million passengers per year. The airport is located approximately four kilometres from the town of Olbia, in northeast Sardinia, and is also well known as Costa Smeralda Airport, as it is situated on the Costa Smeralda. Olbia Airport is one of the three main airports on the island. The other two main airports are those of Alghero and Cagliari, with Cagliari being the largest in Sardinia. The three airports handle passengers arriving to different areas of the island, but Alghero Airport is the closest to Olbia. Driving to Olbia Airport by motorcar is relatively easy, as the airport is linked to a couple of major roads and motorways.

Sardinia is a region famous for its beautiful coastlines of sandy beaches and clear blue waters, and is a popular holiday destination for tourists from the United Kingdom, and local people, from other parts of Italy. Olbia Airport is the perfect arrival point, as there are many lovely beaches nearby the town. The airport is also nearby other towns and areas of interest, for example, Santa Teresa Gallura, Sorsa, Sassari and Ozieri, and Macomer and Oristana are a little further away. Nuoro is also a popular destination nearby both Olbia Airport and Alghero Airport. Further down the island is Cagliari. Olbia Airport can be reached from any of these destinations, as they are all within relatively easy driving distance of the airport.

Olbia Airport is so close to the town centre of Olbia that it will take just a few minutes to reach the airport. Passengers should take traffic into account for their travelling time, but Olbia doesn’t really suffer from too much traffic congestion. Olbia Airport is connected to the town via the SS125.

From the Alghero region in Sardinia, the main roads of the SS127, SS199 and SS131 can be used to reach the airport. Motorists coming from Sassari will also follow the same roads. Passengers arriving at Olbia Airport from Cagliari, or from Ozieri, Macomer and Oristana, will use the main roads of the SS195, SS554, SS128, SP63, SS199 and the SS127. Travelling from Cagliari will take around two hours, depending on the speed limits allowed, while from Alghero, the journey should be around an hour.
Olbia Airport consists of a single terminal building that has its arrival area on one side, and departures area on the other. Domestic and International flights at Olbia Airport are not handled from separate locations. There is a reasonable variety of facilities within the terminal building, which include the Banco Di Sardegna, a full service bank, a couple of ATMs and currency exchange services. There is a VIP lounge in the departures area, and the Meeting and Business Centre on the first floor of the airport.  The ticket office at the airport is located in the departures area, and is open from 05:00 to 20:00, every day of the week. This is the Geasar ticket office, and offers the services of tickets for low cost airlines, payments for excess baggage and special assistant fees, as well as tickets for flights of Meridiana Fly. Credit cards can be used at the ticket office. Further facilities at Olbia Airport include basic first aid services and lost and found offices. The Polo Universitario Di Olbia is also situated within the terminal building, and offers courses in Economics and Tourism. Motorists arriving at Olbia Airport will find adequate parking facilities as well.

Passengers can arrive at Olbia Airport by various other means of transportation. There are frequent buses from the ASPO Company that travel from the centre of Olbia to the airport, and a variety of coach services provide transport from other areas of the island. There is no train station at Olbia Airport, but passengers arriving in Olbia by train can simply take the bus to reach the airport. Taxis are also available on call, or from the main bus and train stations in towns and cities.
