Car Hire at Ancona Airport - Information

Ancona Airport is an excellent arrival point for visiting many interesting towns and cities nearby, as well as for exploring the city of Ancona. Many passengers find that their own rented car is ideal for travelling between areas of interest. The airport offers a wide range of car hire companies, which are mostly globally recognized, and with highly competitive rental rates.

The car hire companies at the airport are all found in the arrivals area of the terminal building. Passengers will find a single air terminal, with an area dedicated to all arrival flights, and another for all departure operations. In 2004, The airport was completed renovated, as well as extended, to allow for a more welcoming and functional building ready to handle the expected increase in passenger traffic during times to come. The building is now very modern, with a range of useful facilities, such as banks, currency exchange services, a pharmacy, first aid services, a VIP lounge and numerous shops and snack bars. The terminal building is easy to navigate, and arriving passengers will quickly find their chosen car hire company.

Although vehicles are available from the car rental counter, it is often recommended to rather make an advanced booking, from your selected Ancona car hire company’s website. The companies of Sixt, Avis, Budget, Easycar, Thrifty, Hertz and Auto Europa are among the choices, and they all have comprehensive websites which display their vehicle categories available at this rental location. An online booking is quick and easy, simply follow the instructions on the website, and ensure that you also reserve any extra item of equipment needed for your journey, such a child safety seat or a satellite navigation system. It is required by law in Italy for young children to be securely seated within the vehicle, and a GPS unit is incredibly useful when travelling in unfamiliar territory. Sixt is one of very few, if any; car hire companies, which offer a GPS unit, included in the rental price of certain vehicles.

Most car hire companies arrange their vehicles into vehicle categories, such as Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard, Full-size, Premium, Minivan etc, and all vehicles are priced and booked according to these categories. Usually their specific makes and models cannot book cars, however, Hertz and Budget offer this option for their clients. Hertz has three collections of vehicles that can be more specifically reserved, while Budget offers their Street Fleet rental vehicles under ‘My Choice’ for this purpose. This option is ideal for those passengers who like to know exactly which vehicle they will be driving. Hertz and Budget are also well known for their wide selection of environmentally friendly vehicles, which are very fuel-efficient as well.

Driving in the centre of Italian cities is not usually recommended, especially not for nervous drivers, as Italians tend to have their ‘own’ way of driving, which is rather aggressive and impatient!  However, a rented car is the ideal form of transport for travelling between cities. Rimini is around 57 km from the airport, and Cortone is about 127 km away. Ascoli Piceno, a very popular destination from Ancona, is approximately 87 km away, and Ravenna and Pescara can be found about 140 km from the airport. The larger and more prominent cities of Venice, Bologna and Rome are also within easy driving distance of Ancona. Some car hire companies offer one-way rentals, which allow you to collect your vehicle, but return it to a different rental location. This option may be useful if you are flying home from another airport.

Road rules in Italy should be obeyed at all times, and drivers caught speeding or driving drunk may receive heavy fines. All fines collected are payable by the primary renter, and not the car hire company. In Italy, the following speed limits are generally applicable, but speed limits are clearly indicated on all roads. Motorways and highways – 130 km/h or 80 mph, open roads in Italy – 90 km/h or 55 mph, while towns and residential areas have a speed limit of 50 km/h or 30 mph.

The primary hirer at most Ancona Airport car rental companies at is required to be at least 21 years of age, and to be able to present a valid drivers license. A young driver fee may be applicable for drivers between the ages of 21 and 25. Payments are usually made by major credit cards, such as American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard / MasterCard, or Visa. Some companies have their own charge card facilities. In some cases, two major credit cards are required for the hiring of certain larger and more spacious vehicles, or for Premium vehicles.

Customers can go to their chosen car hire company’s website for all further information, or they can be contacted at their relevant telephone numbers at the rental counters of the airport.
